Notary?

The League is organizing members who are notaries to notarize ballots when needed.  Stay tuned.  Additional information is coming if you wish to help.

In the meantime, visit www.lwvkc.org and click on the link to find a notary or click here to link to the Secretary of State's list of notaries.

While we are waiting to hear about our court case that would do away with notarization, we do not want to take any chances and have ballots not counted.

Please do not delay mailing in your ballot

Do it now. The Postmaster General will not authorize overtime to get mail delivered in a timely fashion, so it’s possible ballots will be delivered after the election and not be counted.

Yes on Medicaid Expansion

Yes on phone banking

Our League is working with Jobs With Justice, https://mojwj.org/ a non-profit organization that supports Medicaid expansion. Jobs With Justice is providing the League with access to their phone bank system, training, a suggested script and support. All volunteers need are a cell phone and computer with an Internet connection and, of course, a passion to help uninsured Missourians get healthcare by passing Amendment 2.

Members are encouraged to volunteer to call as much as practical during the Phone Bank between now and August 4. Calling starts at 10:30 a.m. Monday-Saturdays and winds up at 8:30; Sundays are 1 p.m. to 8:30 in three hour blocks. Time goes quickly and voters tend to be appreciative.

First time volunteers will be invited to a Zoom meeting for the day/time slot selected. The Zoom meeting will include some information about Medicaid Expansion, but mostly will be training on how the phone system works. Please don't be daunted by this because phone banking's not hard.

If you haven't participated in a Zoom meeting, Mary Lindsay will set up a practice meeting. To sign up, or if you have questions, contact Mary Lindsay at 816-885-9996 or mary.lindsaymsw@gmail.com.

Medicaid expansion - it’s a matter of life and death -  LWV Missouri Presentation

  Yes on 2

Because a lot of people – probably not League members – skip the primary election, the governor put Medicaid expansion, Amendment 2 on the ballot hoping that low turnout will sink the constitutional amendment. Currently Missouri is sending $1 billion tax dollars to Washington; with Medicaid expansion those dollars would come back to the state and take care of our low-income families.

Medicaid expansion would cover Missourians between 19 and 65 whose income is 138 percent of the federal poverty level, or below.  For one person, that’s $17,609 a year; for a family of four it would be $36,156. (From the American Council on Aging online chart  https://www.medicaidplanningassistance.

org/federal-poverty-guidelines/)

There is an interesting collection of supporters who are encouraging a vote yes for Amendment 2.

One group says it’s good for the economy, so we’ll start with the financial ramifications.

The Missouri Foundation for Health hired a company called Regional Economic Models, Inc. (REMI) to evaluate the economic impact of expanding MO HealthNet, the state’s Medicaid program.  MO HealthNet operates under the Patient Protection Affordable Care Act or ACA and commonly, and sometimes derisively called Obamacare.

The business community likes Medicaid Expansion because without expensive health care bills, families would be able to pay for other goods and services.

REMI’s conclusion is the impact on Missouri between 2022-2026 will be $2.5 billion in economic output and  $1.6 million in gross domestic product (GDP) and the average impact on state personal income will be $1.1 billion – in other words “Medicaid expansion would have substantial positive impacts on Missouri’s economy.”

For a different perspective, we’re sharing the Children’s Mercy Hospital Triennial Community Health Needs Assessment. The study helps the hospital determine where it should focus efforts.  The information in the artwork is from the 2019 study. If you’re interested in reviewing the entire PowerPoint, visit https://www.childrensmercy.org/in-the-community/community-benefit/community-health-needs-assessment/

And then there are the other reasons Medicaid expansion makes sense, the quality of life issues which we all know intuitively. A paycheck, when there is one, only goes so far. Missouri’s low minimum wage, $9.45 an hour, provides a gross income of $378 a week for a 40 hour work week. It simply isn’t a living wage and is a vivid reason for expanding Medicaid.

Better health outcomes would ripple through society – fewer days off work (when life returns to some semblance of normal), fewer sick children for better educational outcomes and new jobs created because of the increased demand for MO HealthNet services.
