A New Look!

Some changes are on the way!

My name is Jim Calvert and I am the new editor of eVoter for LWVKC. Let me say this first; Barbara is my wife and Anne is my sister. Those of you familiar with LWVKC will understand that statement now. The rest of you will in time.

Though I am new to the League, having joined in May of last year, I grew up with LWV as both of my parents were active League members in my hometown of Emporia, Kansas. I believe firmly in the values it stands for. Still, don’t hesitate to contact me at editor@lwvkc.org if you have any announcements or need to correct any missteps I've made.

Finally, I would like to thank Cheryl Barnes for holding down this post, along with many other duties, for so long. She has paved the way for me to step in and quickly get up to speed, with templates already in place, and by spending the time with me I needed to move forward.

So, here we go!

Jim

HB 942 - Hoffner- School Accreditation classifications.  Five new sections.  Public schools and school district accreditation by a statewide assessment system.  Current DESE accreditation is given to traditional public schools and school districts.  Classification categories: Unaccredited, Provisional, Accredited, and Accredited With Distinction.
Charter [schools] choose their accrediting agency independently which have different criteria and do not use classifications.

Children & Families Committee
HB 560 - Ingle and HB 557 - Veit.  May come up to committee this week.
"Child Residential Home Notification Act."  Would require all faith based boarding schools to register with the state, conduct criminal background checks for employees and volunteers, and adherence to state fire, safety and health regulations.  Currently, boarding schools for minors in MO are  not regulated by the state claiming "religious exemption."  Relates to "reform boarding schools" or "troubled minor" schools.
