MONTHLY MEETING: Making Home in the Heartland:Mexican Immigration to KC in the Early 20th Century
About this event
In the first decades of the twentieth century, thousands of Mexicans who fled political turmoil arrived in the Kansas City area searching for new lives and opportunities. This new population became critical in Kansas City's industrial success and transformed the social and economic landscape of the region. Despite facing discrimination, racism, and exploitation, Mexican immigrants established roots in the city and created vibrant communities on both sides of the state line. They made the heartland home.
Dr. Sandra Enriquez is an Assistant Professor of History and the Director of the Public History Emphasis at UMKC. A native of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, Enriquez's research and teaching interests include Latinx history, urban history, social movements, and Public History.
