We're Getting Close
So Much to Do, So Little Time

We’ve got 42 days to go until the November 5 election, and just 15 more days to register voters! Election day seems like it will never get here, but also seems way too close for all the work we have to do. But, with all of us working together, we can help Metro residents have the best opportunity to register, and learn about the candidates and issues on the ballot.

Take care and stay safe.

Candidate Forums

In anticipation of the November 5 election, the League has scheduled nine candidate forums in October, one for the Jackson County Prosecutor, and eight for candidates for the Missouri Legislature.
A complete list can be found here!
All forums will start on Zoom at 6:30. The first is on Tuesday, October 8.
All League members (and their friends and other contacts) are encouraged to attend, and to submit questions for the candidates here!
Also, the Forums Committee is looking for additional tech support, specifically for someone who could help with setting up the webinars, a 45-minute process. Training will be provided.
If you have some tech skills and a little time, please contact Teri Lane here!

Adopt-A-Poll
Volunteer and Help Fundraise

We all know what an important election year this is for our city, state and country. Our form of government and the quality of our democracy are on the line. The League, at every level, is fully engaged in Empowering Voters and Defending Democracy. Not only does that place a demand on our members’ time and talents, but it also requires more financial support to reach voters, increase turnout, produce materials, and buy advertising.
The Adopt-A-Poll program is a proven way to generate much-needed funds for LWVKC and provide the poll workers the Kansas City Election Board depends on to deliver the well-managed elections they are known for.
Plan now to continue as a veteran poll worker or become a new recruit. You can find all the necessary information here.
Make a plan to turn in your application paperwork by October 1st.
This Alert comes with a serious but achievable GOAL.
The Kansas City Election Board will pay the League directly if we have at least 10 participants. We’ve made that hurdle in the past.
We are asking our members to double that so that we have 20 poll workers at the November 5th General Election. That would raise about $11,000!
We can do this! Join Sandy Eeds (like the last two presidential elections, and every election in between}, who is reaching out a little early so you can find a way to join this valuable public service that is so much a part of the League’s brand.

Member Profile
Getting to Know Our Members

Meet Laura Marcus Mountjoy

Laura, what drew you to the League? “I volunteered for Literacy KC for years. Our past LWVKC president, Sandy Eeds, was also on the board and a volunteer for Literacy KC, and suggested that I join LWVKC. I told him I was unsure about their nonpartisanship. Sandy said if we could just get everyone to vote we’d be okay. I decided I agreed, and joined the LWVKC as a household with my husband, Dave.
Then a year later in 2019 Donna Hoch, the Membership Committee Chair, had an accident and could no longer work. Sandy asked if I’d step in as Membership Chair for Donna, so by accident (pun intended) I became the Chair of the Membership Committee.
Being nonpartisan has been lovely during this time. We just want to make sure voters are registered and know how to find the information they need to be informed voters.”
What is your main focus these days? “We are currently focused on getting members onboarded. It’s a busy time as we are getting two new members a week.”
Laura is pictured with her husband Dave.

What volunteer needs do you have? “We need volunteers to reach out to new members and help them sign up for New Member Orientations and our Non-partisan/DEI training. We also need help getting new members involved in the committees their talents and time are most suited for. We need people to help make phone calls to members who have received their 3rd membership notice regarding their expired membership. We have work parties for volunteers to make buttons for three committees, and to  get materials ready to be distributed to the organizations where people can access the information.”
What has your committee accomplished? “We are up to 289 members as of

Tuesday. Everywhere my husband and I go we hand out League business cards and talk up the League.”
Laura is retired from being a special education teacher, and, prior to that, was in medical sales. She still works hard in her positions with the League as Membership Chair and Book Club Chair. She belongs to two book clubs, is an avid cyclist, snow skier, enjoys pickleball and going to the gym. When she’s not exercising, she enjoys her eight grandchildren and traveling. Her last trip was to South Korea in July to attend her son’s wedding.

Words of Wisdom
Just a Thought

Voting is not magic. Voting is medicine.  Magic happens when you want it, and thus it appears that medicine recognizes that you are living in a society of ills, of diseases, of cancers to our communities, to our visions.  And the remedy is to vote.  But that remedy sometimes is more bitter, . . . it feels, than the disease you're fighting.  And so we don't want to take it -- or worse, we curse the cure.
My argument is that we've got to keep taking our medicine because the evil doesn't go away.  The ills don't disappear after one swig, after one dose . . . it gets more and more resistant.  And so we've got to keep doing it because we're not just trying to get better, we're trying to stop bad from getting worse.
I see voting as medicine, and I take my medicine.

I take my medicine even when I don't like it.

I take my medicine when I don't think it's working.

I take my medicine because to NOT take my medicine is to let the evil win, to let wrong win.
So, take your medicine.

A Call to Action
Compassion Always Works

The weather has finally cooled, and we're at that sweet spot where all major sports leagues are playing…my favorite time of year. But storm clouds are brewing over the upcoming November election. Political violence, not seen in America since the days of Helter Skelter, are back. Fueled by mis and disinformation, hate-filled rhetoric, and the dangerous use of tropes to create hate for one another, our democracy feels as fragile as it ever has.
Read the entire essay here!
So, we need you to step up and get involved. Be the person willing to listen to some you disagree with. Be the person who understands when someone sees the issues in a different light. Be the person willing to reach out despite political differences. Once the election is over, we all have to live TOGETHER with the results…and each other.

Take care and stay safe.

Help Wanted
Voter Guide Distributors Needed
As a result of our partnership with the Kansas City Media Collective (KCMC), LWVKC will distribute 15,000 voter guides this year.  That’s 3,000 more than we have done previously, and we need volunteers to help us get these guides delivered.
If you have a few hours available during the first week of October.
Find an opportunity that’s a good fit for your schedule here!
We’ve created a dozen opportunities based on where the distribution sites are located, so you won’t need to drive all over the city.
The KC Media Collective (KCMC), a group of media and non-profit organizations in the area, will produce an online and a printed voter guide for the November 5 general election. For more information about KCMC and to view their online voter guide,  go to kcvoterguide.org.
LWVKC will publish its online voter guide, vote411.org, by mid-October.
Email us at vote411@lwvkc.org if you have any questions.

Legislative Action Committee

Legislative Tracking is where we follow the progress of a bill or a joint resolution as it makes its way through the legislative process. The goal of our Legislative Action Committee (LAC) is to amplify the voices of the members of the LWVMO, LWVKC, and Missouri citizens so we may have an influence on the legislators crafting and voting in new laws.
The final products of Legislative Tracking are weekly Calls to Action (CTA) which go out via social media, newsletters, emails, and podcasts. We encourage our members to use the tools provided in the CTAs to express their support or opposition to bills currently being considered in the legislature. We focus on bills that align with league priorities and have league positions.
Trackers  work in teams with a team leader who will distribute tasks according to individuals’ strengths and interests. Each team follows bills in a specific category (voting rights, reproductive rights, firearms, etc.)
We offer training and resources to help trackers learn how to:

Navigate Senate and House websites
Find and read the legislative calendars for each chamber
Understand the process of how a  bill becomes a law
Choose and track bills and maintain a record of them

Complete forms for Calls to Action
Use  google docs

We hold weekly 30 min Monday morning zoom meetings at 11:30 during the session (January through May) to discuss issues or problems with the process, answer questions, and accept suggestions.
Trackers track their bills on their own time. You can contact the team leaders with questions, or Riva and Melanie are available to answer questions at any time during the week.
Our wider legislative action group includes the League, and members of leagues from across the state. We would like to continue to expand our committee membership so notify us if you are interested in joining.
For additional information about the committee, refer to the LWVKC webpage here!

Ok...it's actually a form, but it is a form for suggestions with boxes to fill out

Now’s your chance!
