It's Election Time
Just 14 Days Left

This is the last eVoter before election day, but our work continues. We have Program Planning to do, recruiting to do, and outreach to do. Still, the end of the year does offer us the opportunity to celebrate our successes at our December 12 event, so save the date!

Take care and stay safe.

Champion for Change

Voting is fundamental to U.S. democracy, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 is a bedrock law protecting every American's right to register to vote and to cast their ballot. The Voting Rights Act remains one of the hardest-fought safeguards for Black Americans and other minority groups. Yet today, threats to fair, safe elections persist.
The NAACP Kansas City, Missouri Branch invites you to a Voter Education Forum, where we will discuss voter suppression, from the young adult to the Church.
We encourage all to come out to see the film SUPPRESSED AND SABOTAGED: The Fight to Vote.
The film focuses on the swelling wave of efforts to disenfranchise voters across the U.S. Hear personal stories of those in battleground states who represent those disproportionately affected by voter suppression: older adults; first-time voters; younger voters; college-aged students; Black, Indigenous, and LatinX people; people of color; and people with disabilities.
Following the short film will be a panel discussion on voter suppression.
Please join us and share/forward this with those on your contact list so that we all can be informed and fight for Democracy come this November
When: Thursday, October 24, 2024 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Where: Macedonia Baptist Church, 1700 E Linwood Boulevard
In partnership with APRI, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Beta Omega Chapter, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Alpha Delta Sigma Chapter and KCGP - Kids Community Growing Prosperity
Democracy is under attack. Let's save it.

Monthly Meeting

Where: Kansas City Public Library, Trails West Branch, 11401 E 23rd St

The Small and the Mighty

A Kansas City Public Library Signature Event. A former high school government and law teacher, Sharon McMahon acquired the nickname “America’s Government Teacher” during the 2020 election when her fact-checking social media posts went viral.
McMahon’s debut book, The Small and the Mighty: Twelve Unsung Americans Who Changed the Course of History, from the Founding to the Civil Rights Movement, focuses on historical figures who didn’t make it into the textbooks – from a formerly enslaved woman on a mission to reunite with her daughter to a young boy detained at a Japanese incarceration camp.
McMahon shares some of these remarkable stories, discusses her ongoing fight against misinformation in an era of surging fake news and banned books, and explains how non-partisan facts can help us feel less afraid.
Sharon McMahon’s presentation can also be viewed live at YouTube.com/KCLibrary. No special links or passwords are required.
When: October 24, 2024 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Where: Unity Temple on the Plaza, 707 W 47th St

Meet Greg Woodhams

It was my pleasure to speak with Greg Woodhams, Chair of the Voter Education and Election Administration committees. Greg noted that at this time, the work of the Election Administration committee has been completed. It culminated with positions that were endorsed and approved by LWVKC and adopted by LWV of Missouri.

Your Sample Ballot for the November 5th Election is Available NOW

The election is almost here and you need to go to vote411.org/ballot, enter your address, and Vote411 shows only the races and ballot issues you will see on November 5. See your personal ballot here!
Candidates have responded to our invitation to participate and provided information on their background, qualifications, and priorities.
So Vote411 not only tells you who is running, but how they will serve if elected. Mayors, city council members, and school board directors make the decisions that directly affect us and our families every day. Voter turnout is typically low for local elections, so one vote - maybe yours - can make a big difference.

A Call to Action
Protect Our Polls

As I noted earlier, this will be the last newsletter before election day, and our work continues. November 5 will be a critical day for our democracy. As we found out thanks to the Election Integrity Committee’s hard work on threats to our polls, we know that various tactics will be used, both through the courts, and directly at the polls, to suppress the vote. The League will stand with every eligible voter and protect their right to vote.

There are currently over 35 volunteer opportunities available on our website. So, This is your chance to help at the most critical point in our election cycle by signing up here!

We Want Your Blood
A Poke and a Sting to Save a Life
The CDC has updated its Covid-19 guidelines as they shift from pandemic response to endemic management. Though Kansas City still remains a high-risk area, we have decided to change our focus from Covid-19 vaccination to the tremendous need for blood donors. Two agencies collect blood in Kansas City, The American Red Cross and The Community Blood Centers. Please consider providing this gift of life as one of your community service projects. The websites are listed below.

The American Red Cross may be found here!
