Empowering Voters, Defending Democracy

We are the League of Women Voters of Kansas City, Jackson, Clay, Platte Counties, part of the national League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan, grassroots organization working to protect and expand voting rights and ensure everyone is represented in our democracy.

We empower voters and defend democracy through advocacy, education, and litigation, at the local, state, and national levels. Our local LWV league is 100% volunteer.

Mission Statement


“The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization encouraging informed and active participation in government. It influences public policy through education and advocacy. We never support or oppose any political party or candidate.”


The League of Women Voters has two separate and distinct roles.


1. Voters Service/Citizen Education: We present unbiased nonpartisan information about elections, the voting process, and issues.


2. Action/Advocacy: Although we are also nonpartisan, after study we use our positions to advocate for or against policies in the public interest.

  • LWV founding date: The League of Women Voters was founded on Feb. 14, 1920.
  • Locally, we incorporated in 1964.
  • LWV includes 700+ leagues, working in all 50 states.
  • Please note: Our chapters are referred to as “Leagues.”
