A Word from Above

Our President Speaks

We find ourselves confronted with an issue which has affected a collaboration with a trusted partner organization regarding a lack of cultural sensitivity and missteps on our part. This is prompting us to reflect and examine our policies, practices, and norms, not only to respond to the current development, but to ensure we are a better member of the Kansas City area non-profit community going forward. We must back up our stated commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion with an understanding of how our actions and words affect others.

Candidate Forums

Visit LIve or by Zoom

The Forums Committee is busy planning seven Zoom candidate forums for the April 2 Municipal Election. Our two recent Independence City Council Candidate forums made front page news in the January 31 Examiner newspaper here!
Though only 45 people were live viewers of the two forums, there were 329 views of the recorded forums on our @LWVKC YouTube channel. The Forums Admin Team are confident that our decision to move all our candidate forums to Zoom benefits voters who may view our forum recordings at their convenience.

League Members in Action
Weekend Warriors

The League is in the process of adopting a new position on Election Administration. As part of that process, Greg Woodhams has led consensus meetings to provide members with the opportunity to shape the language of the position statements.
Of course, once the work is done, members break bread together.

Greg Woodhams leads members through the different position statements proposed in a meeting room at the Kansas City Public Library, Plaza Branch.
Members walked across the street from the library to Banksia to start the weekend off right. The League proudly supports local businesses.

Observer Corps
2023 Fourth Quarter Report

Observer Corps members attend public meetings in person or online and alert LWVKC leadership of any issues that may require action on the part of the League. One of the perks of working with the Observer Corps is developing a much greater understanding of how effectively our local governments work – the issues, the resources, and the personalities. Observers do just that – we do not speak for the League, we observe on behalf of the League. The elected and appointed officials we watch know we’re there.
Check out our 4th quarter report featuring reports on Library Boards in Cass County and North Kansas City; School Boards in North Kansas City, Lee’s Summit, Center, Hickman Mills, and Blue Springs; Board of Police Commissioners; Cass County Commission and the North Kansas City City Council; and the KC Human Rights Commission. Election authorities are preparing for an active 2024 election year as well as conducting November 2023 elections. We observed the election authority in Cass County (County Clerk Jeff Fletcher), the urban election boards in Clay, Jackson, and Platte Counties, and the Kansas City Election Board.

A Call to Action
Guns ARE the Problem
The shots that ended the celebration for our Super Bowl champion Chiefs shows just how much our state and country need quality leadership. The arrests made were not a result of a “good guy with a gun,” but rather unarmed citizens taking action.
Read the entire essay here!
But none of these events happen by themselves. You joined the League because you care and want to make a difference.  So, please step up to the plate now and give of your time and talent. Choose the volunteer opportunities that speak to you the most and sign up here!

We Want Your Blood
A Poke and a Sting to Save a Life

Save a Life Today

The CDC has updated its Covid-19 guidelines as they shift from pandemic response to endemic management. Though Kansas City still remains a high-risk area, we have decided to change our focus from Covid-19 vaccination to the tremendous need for blood donors. Two agencies collect blood in Kansas City, The American Red Cross and The Community Blood Centers. Please consider providing this gift of life as one of your community service projects. The websites are listed below.

The American Red Cross may be found here!

The Community Blood Centers may be found here!
