A Note from the Editor

Those of you who regularly read my eVoters (approximately 50% of those who receive it), know of my preference for brevity on the page, with links to more complete articles. For the first time (thanks to hyperlink technology), The Call will follow the same protocol as the eVoter. All of the information normally provided in The Call will still be available, just in a more easily accessible format with the judicious use of links.

And I want you to read all the way to the bottom of this notice as we continue to fight for the voting rights of Americans. Missouri, along with several other states, has enacted changes to the laws (SB 654 & HB 1878) to allow the Secretary of State to audit any Local Election Authority (LEA), and withhold funds needed to provide for elections should the Secretary determine the LEA is deficient.
Other new laws (some successfully challenged in court) require photo IDs, limit voter outreach (like the League’s), and eliminate funding for presidential primaries.
Kansas City voters need the League as much now as at any time in history. Thank you for stepping into the breach to defend democracy.

President's Letter to the Membership

2024 Annual Meeting

Last year, in this space, I talked about the challenges we would face this election season. Wow! I don't think anyone could anticipate how quickly and vociferously the attacks on voting rights, LGBTQ rights, reproductive rights and the right to live without gun violence would happen! There is so much work to be done, but LWVKC members have stood up! I encourage you to visit the website and take a look around to see what has been added since last year. There is a consolidated calendar of local candidate forums to make it easy to hear from candidates; there are updated, beautiful flyers for you to share via email or to hang at your church or favorite coffee shop; there is a graphic novel explaining how those questions get on the ballot and why they matter so much; there is even a super-cool video explaining why your ballot is safe and voting machines are in no danger of getting hacked. I hope you will poke around the site and share as much of our vetted, accurate information as possible.
I have used this space for the past several years to write words intended to fire you up. I don't feel the need to do that this year. We know the stakes. We are fired up.
Instead I will skip to my last paragraph from last year, which bares repeating:
I dream of a day when our organization is not needed, when all members of our society value the right to vote as much as we do, a world where civics are taught from the first step a kindergartner takes into the classroom to the final words of their graduation speech.
Until that day, we must continue to work together to Empower Voters and Defend Democracy.
It is my honor to work with this incredible, passionate group of people. Thank you.

Anne Calvert

President
